On the 22nd and 23rd of May, participants gathered for a dynamic, engaging and insightful Digital Content Creation Workshop designed to equip them with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in today’s digital landscape. The two workshops, held at the Huddersfield Mission on the 22nd of May and the Midland Hotel, Bradford on the 23rd, focused on the essentials of creating impactful online content, with particular emphasis on social media engagement and search engine optimisation (SEO).

The sessions were run by Dr Milton Brown and Christopher Morgan from Kirklees Local Television, as part of the Black Business Consortium West Yorkshire.

The event began with a warm welcome and introductions, followed by an overview of the workshop objectives. Facilitators highlighted the growing importance of digital content in modern communication, setting the stage for an engaging and interactive learning experience.

The workshop explored various facets of digital content creation:

  • Understanding Digital Content: Participants learnt what digital content entails and the different types – from blogs and social media posts to videos and infographics. There was a strong focus on understanding target audiences to ensure content resonates effectively.
  • Best Practices for Social Media: Strategies for crafting engaging posts and understanding the nuances of platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn were discussed. The significance of visual elements, like images and videos, in capturing audience attention was emphasised.
  • Tools for Content Creation: Participants were introduced to useful tools including Canva and Adobe Express. A hands-on session allowed them to brainstorm and create sample posts, fostering practical learning.
  • Introduction to SEO: The workshop demystified SEO, covering essential components like keywords, on-page and off-page SEO, and link building. Interactive activities encouraged participants to reflect on their understanding of SEO and its significance in enhancing content visibility.
  • Integrating SEO into Content Creation: Strategies for keyword research, crafting SEO-friendly content, and optimising social media for better search engine performance were highlighted. Participants engaged in brainstorming exercises and paragraph rewriting tasks to apply these concepts.

Across both sessions, a variety of group activities and team-based exercises encouraged collaboration and practical application of the concepts discussed. Highlights included:

  • Sticky note brainstorming sessions to define SEO in participants’ own words.
  • Rotating stations for keyword identification, on-page vs. off-page SEO categorisation, and link building exercises.
  • DIY analytics simulations, which offered real-world insights into interpreting website traffic data.
  • Group activities where participants created SEO-optimised social media posts and shared them for constructive feedback.
